It is a herbaceous plant, with creeping, voluble stems and tubers of orange pulp. Its origin is from Tropical America: Colombia, French Guiana, Guyana, Suriname, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Paraguay and Brazil.

Orange sweet potatoes are a source of vitamins and minerals. A medium sweet potato has 165% of the vitamin A you need per day from the beta-carotene it contains, along with more than 20% of the potassium, a nutrient that lowers blood pressure in most adults. They are also rich in niacin and vitamin C.
